WOMEN'S RIGHTS

 David  was more comfortable in groups of women than groups of men because he did not like sports, and he did like cooking.  He best liked mixed groups that could talk about books or restaurants or spices or fishing or gambling in Vegas and where sexual orientation little mattered.


He had always thought of himself as egalitarian.  Sex equity was the goal.

However, in his aging years, women had become more militantly against the patriarchy.  

They felt it was fine to torch it.  

They blamed the state of the world on old, white men.

Women who in no other context would not have tolerated stereotyping by age, or color, or gender could easily demonize old white men.

David felt it was sad.

Then too he loved to watch women.  Make love, not war seemed a fine value. He lusted easily, and found delight in the faces of pretty girls and in the beauty of women in life and in art.  

Generally, he kept those feelings to himself as they were not welcome.  The era of free love had long ended.

In relationships he had always valued freedom.  Open relationships seemed to make the most sense. possessive relationships the least.  Monogamy seemed an impediment to honesty and a needless restriction.  He did not want to be owned, nor did he want to own. 

He had always thought when he was with Ella that were she to find someone who was more desirable, more comfortable, more ???  he would never want to restrict her.

Such attitudes did not seem to lead to promiscuity.  David and Ella had enjoyed very few lovers outside of their marriage  and those ran their course quickly as infatuations wore easily or stayed in the background.

OFF ON THE PONTOON MOST OF THE DAY.

I spent most of the day on the water at Elizabeth was in Authentic Dancing.  First a rain cloud chased me in to the dock and a snack.  Then it al ll cleared again and I was out drifting. In the morning there was no noise.  No other boats.  No yappy dogs.  No working on the land people running gas movers. I did not get the fulll sense of this section with four colors in the same clump of birches.    It was my favorite.

BUTCH

 Butch lived just down the road.  He lived by himself and stayed to himself except to visit David almost on a daily visit. Butch said very little.  David would reflect on something and whether it was just a duck that was on the fallen willow or was some philosophical concept that David was mulling over, Butch would just listen and then he'd say, "Yep" And that was it. However, David felt fine when Butch visited and poured a cup of coffee.  Dave liked Butch's disheveled look of old jeans and plaid shirts, he liked the uncombed, uncut hair.  Butch was easy company.

In the morning David watched the ducks flitter across the lake or rest and prune feathers on the branches of the fallen willow tree. Most of the year there were mallards and the occasional blue heron. In migration months merganzers came. One coronmont showed very occasionally. In the air above the lake waters an eagle might flap by. And he watched woodpeckers, chickadee, nuthatch, goldfinch visit the feeder.  It was always quiet in the morning.  In warm months the motors would shatter that, but not until ten AM.   It was good to sip hazelnut coffee in the lounge and just watch ducks. When he had been a younger man, he would go out before the mist lifted and fish bluegills from the rowboat.  At 75 he could only manage the pontoon boat and generally chose the afternoon. On summer Saturdays and Sundays he would leave in late morning and drive to shop or perhaps to see "Group of Musicians" at the Clark Museum in Williamstown.  He did not want to be on the lake ...
